Dooks is perhaps best known for its thriving colony of the natterjack Toad.
In order to encourage the survival of this rare species Dooks has built two pond
areas and received a European Union Environmental award in recognition of this
important work in conservation.
 |
The natterjack toad is a preserved species and accordingly it's habitat is preserved. Dooks Golf Links is one of
its few remaining habitats. Adult toads are seldom seen by golfers as they are nocturnal.
|
About March they emerge from hibernation, such as burrows they have dug in sand banks with their short powerful
limbs the previous late Autumn. The toad has a dry dull bumpy looking skin, olive green in colour and yellow-orange-red
spots on its back, and a distinctive yellow stripe alone the spine. The hind legs are shorter and less muscular and it
normally crawls, though it may hop a little when it's startled.
The club and its members are proud and pleased to help in the preservation of this little animal and its habitat.
Indeed the Club has received a European environmental award for the new specially constructed Natterjack ponds at hole 15.
